Type 26 Pillbox, Stonepitts Bridge

The Stroudwater Canal provided a ready-made barrier that was used as part of 'Stop-line Green'. This was a World War II defensive line running for about 100 miles in a rough semi-circle from Highbridge (Burnham-on-Sea) on the Bristol Channel to Upper Framilode on the River Severn. This would have been used to protect Bristol and Avonmouth had Britain been invaded.

This Type FR3/26 pillbox is of prefabricated concrete with the entrance on the south side. There are loopholes (openings through which defensive forces inside can fire weapons) on all sides.

A review of the Stroudwater WWII Pillboxes has been produced by the Gloucestershire Society for Industrial Archaeology (GSIA), which can be downloaded via the link in the right panel if using the main CCiP website.
