Sometime after the Thames & Severn Canal was abandoned, the bridge that carried the A46 (road) over the canal at Wallbridge in Stroud was closed to through traffic. An improved alternative route was created by infilling a short section of canal nearby.
In July 2010 as part of the Phase 1a restoration programme, construction of a new 'Stroud Brewery' bridge at the same location was started. It took about a year to complete and was opened to traffic on 21 July 2011.
The bridge was officially opened by Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal (Princess Anne) on 10 February 2012.
