Ile's Lock, Chalford

Ile's Lock was canal designed to take craft up to the standard dimensions of the Thames barges. It is a little over 90 feet long and about 13 feet wide, and has a rise of 8 feet (2.4m).

The chamber is brick lined and stone quoined, with a substantial stone coping and stone-edged recesses for the gates. There are surviving traces of ironwork associated with the gate hangings, and some fragments of lock gates as well. There were ground paddles in the side walls above the top gates, at right-angles to the cut where the mouth of the lock narrowed abruptly.

This lock has also been known as Grist Mill, or Wallbanks Lock.
