The Thames & Severn Canal at Latton

This page explains the original and likely new route of the Thames & Severn Canal between Latton and Cricklade.

Because much of the canal line has been lost or infilled between Latton & Cricklade, coupled with the construction of the A419 trunk route, tracing the original line can be difficult.

(The explanation may be easier to follow with an enlarged copy of the Canal Map or OS Explorer 1:25 000 map, sheet 169, or by viewing the on-line maps, the links for which are contained within the grid references.)

The above photo shows the original line of the canal (red dotted-line) from the Kempsford Road Bridge , over the A419 near Cricklade, looking towards Latton. The blue dotted, line to the right of the photo, is the likely new route of the canal.

The series of photos below follow the route of the old canal line from the left of the photo above, to the point at which the 'old' and 'new' lines meet, and a short distance beyond to the new Latton Bridge (culvert) and the site of a new Latton Lock.

The photos under the 'New Line' heading show the new canal line when traversed from Cricklade heading towards Latton.

This lock has long since been filled-in, and no visible trace survives.

This is about the point where the 'old' & 'new' routes will converge at Latton (see top photo).

The new line will run alongside the road above heading in the Cricklade direction (Note the A419 is immediately to the right of this road.) [View: East]

This is the approximate location at Latton where the canal originally crossed the old A419, and where the restored canal will run.

The 'new' A419 and 1997-built canal culvert are behind the panel fence to the left. However, the road above still requires a bridge. [View: West]

Approximate location of the re-sited Latton Lock. (This photo was taken on the other side of the A419 from the last.) The 1997-built culvert under the A419 is also in this photo, although, at the current time, this is completely buried. An additional bridge will be needed for an access road on this side of the A419 (just visible in front of the fencing).

The line of trees marks the route of the existing canal as it leaves Cricklade heading Eastwards towards Eysey.

(This photo was taken from the same bridge as the top photo, but from the opposite parapet.)

The line of trees to the left of this photo mark the existing canal line, which ends where it reaches the A419 (see left). The restored canal will veer away at this point to cross under the Kempsford Road via a new bridge to be built in the embankment opposite.

This view is from the Kempsford Road (on the embankment looking towards Latton) where the new bridge might be constructed, and shows the likely route of the canal post restoration (see blue-dotted line on top photo).

FLOOD RELIEF CHANNEL
Culvert Under Kempsford Road Bridge

Culvert will not be a part of a restored canal

The culvert under the Kempsford Road Bridge can easily be taken for the line the canal will take after restoration. It is on the canal line, and it passes under the A419 dual-carriageway. However, this is a flood relief channel, and will not form part of the restored navigation. The canal will pass under the A419 using the new Latton Bridge/culvert (see above) approx. 1km to the North-West.

(This culvert is underneath the point from where the top photo was taken)
